Systemic leadership – a term featuring in leadership press more and more … and typically in a discussion that also features the leadership challenge and current reality that is VUCA – Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.

Apparently, a Systemic Leader is someone who can tread the VUCA path with calm, confidence and clarity. But how do they do this? What have they learned? And how does one become a Systemic Leader?

According to Peter Senge, one of the esteemed pioneers of the application of systems theory to the organisational arena, there are 3 core capabilities or attributes of a Systemic Leader:

  • The ability to see the larger system
  • The ability to foster reflection and more generative thinking
  • The ability to shift the collective focus from reactive problem solving to co-creating the future
